Terim, Amerikan matematikçi Edward Kasner’in yeğeni Milton Sirotta tarafından bulunmuş ve Kasner ve James Newman’ın yazdığı “Mathematics and the Imagination” (Matematik ve Hayal Gücü) kitabında popülerleşmiştir. Google’ın terim üzerindeki kelime oyunu, şirketin web üzerindeki uçsuz bucaksız bilgiyi düzenleme misyonunun da bir yansımasıdır.
